CFD is applied to numerous applications, including protecting fragile coastlines, simulating wave impact on structures, towing tanks, sloshing in tanks, optimizing hull design, and studying ventilation within a ship, e.g. toxic fume ventilation.

Offshore Mooring Systems
Ropes are used broadly in offshore mooring systems. Their forces and torques on moving objects are functions of their deformation determined by location and orientation of the moving objects. FLOW-3D allows users to define springs and ropes that exert forces and torques on these moving objects. The simulations below show an oil platform pushed about by waves under hurricane conditions. Comparison of the two animations clearly demonstrates how the ropes restrict and stabilize the platform’s motion under severe wave conditions.
